Blueprint is Hiring for the 2021-2022 Term!


If you would like to apply for a position with Blueprint Magazine for the 2021-2022 term please send a resume and a 1-2 page platform to editor@blueprintmagazine.ca. A platform is a statement outlining an individual’s interest in a role, and the ideas or skills that one would bring to a team. Please specify which role you are applying for. Specific positions must include portfolios in their application. See details below in each description of what should be included in portfolios.

EXECUTIVE Positions

Literary Editor

The Literary Editor is someone who has a critical and comprehensive eye for the writing of others. In charge of the written content within Blueprint Magazine, the Literary Editor must also submit at minimum one original piece every issue. They should have strong interpersonal skills, as they will be tasked with communicating with contributors and encouraging others to contribute. Also, the Literary Editor must have strong reading and writing skills, as editing, proofreading, and critical examination of text are imperative to this position.

The above position requires a portfolio of the applicant’s best written work. Please include 3-4 pages of poetry or 5-6 pages of prose, depending on which genre you prefer. If you write in both genres, please make your portfolio no longer than 6 pages.

Art and Photography Manager

The Art and Photography Manager will oversee all visual content of Blueprint, in part by forging connections with other artists and photographers, both on campus and in the community. They must contribute original work to each issue. The Art and Photography Manager must also work with the Editor-in-Chief in finding and contacting artists to design cover art for each issue. A passionate interest in art and photography is important for this position, as are strong design and artistic skills, interpersonal skills, and action plans to gather a wide variety of different mediums of art to include within issues.

The above position requires a portfolio of the applicant’s best visual work. Please include 3 examples of whichever medium you create: drawing/sketching, painting, photography, digital art. If you work with multiple art forms, please include one example of each.

Social Media and Marketing Manager

The Social Media and Marketing Manager will be integral to publicizing Blueprint’s name and image on campus, in the community (if applicable), and online. By creating original advertising campaigns, holding concourse booths, and placing posters on campus with issue and event advertisements, the Social Media and Marketing Manager will have a significant impact on Blueprint’s image. Skills and experience within marketing, knowledge of multiple mediums that materials can be made and promoted in, and a creative approach are important for this position. Strong social media skills are also essential.

Events Manager

The Events Manager plans and facilitates launch parties, and assists the art and literary departments in hosting events such as workshops on campus and in the community (if applicable) as well as online virtual events. They are responsible for booking spaces, envisioning each event’s unique aesthetic, and obtaining decorations and catering. Candidates should have experience or interest in event planning or project coordination.

Web Editor

The Web Editor will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief and Promotions team (Social Media and Marketing Manager and Events Manager) to ensure that Blueprint has a strong web presence and content strategy. Individual responsibilities will include uploading the issues (in PDF form) to the website, collaborating on a social media strategy, and ensuring web content is up to date. Experience with WordPress and knowledge of basic HTML and/or CSS is an asset, but not a requirement. Candidates should, however, show a willingness to learn the basics of web design and upkeep. There is a lot of opportunity for creativity in this role and candidates are encouraged to take initiative to fulfill their vision for Blueprint’s web strategy, whether that involves regular blog posts, issue-themed playlists, an e-newsletter, or other online methods of reader engagement.

Audio-Visual (AV) Editor

The AV Editor will receive video requests from the Editor-in-Chief and other staff members that reflect Blueprint‘s image, current issue themes, and ongoing online projects. The AV Editor will be expected to edit and publish at least one promotional video monthly. The AV Editor should be familiar with Adobe Creative Cloud software such as Premiere Pro but any knowledge of AV editing software is an asset.

VOLUNTEER Positions

Internships

In collaboration with the senior staff team, Blueprint Interns will have the opportunity to assist in editing written submissions, formatting visual submissions, helping with production, and assisting in the promotion of new issues and events. Interns will have the opportunity to get their feet wet and develop their skills with a variety of different aspects of the publication, so an enthusiasm to learn is important for this position. We will try our best to suit projects and assignments to Interns’ interests.

Writing Team

The Writing Team is managed by the Literary Editor, who will be sending reminder emails to Members about upcoming submission deadlines. Members are required to submit at least one written piece per issue to maintain their spot on the Writing Team (unless due notice is provided to the Literary Editor). Members are given the opportunity to experience the world of publishing first-hand by working with the Literary Editor to complete the writing, editing, and proofreading process before the final piece is published.

The above position requires a portfolio of the applicant’s best written work. Please include 3-4 pages of poetry or 5-6 pages of prose, depending on which genre you prefer. If you write in both genres, please make your portfolio no longer than 6 pages.

Art and Photography Team

Similar to the Writing Team, the Art and Photography team is managed by the Art and Photography Manager, who will be sending reminder emails to Members about upcoming submission deadlines. Members are required to submit at least one visual piece per issue to maintain their spot on the Art and Photography Team (unless due notice is provided to the Art and Photography Manager). Members are given the opportunity to contribute to the magazine by providing enticing images based on current themes that will be published as visual cues alongside the magazine’s written work.

The above position requires a portfolio of the applicant’s best visual work. Please include 3 examples of whichever medium you create: drawing/sketching, painting, photography, digital art. If you work with multiple art forms, please include one example of each.
