Seven Months and Counting

Marilla: “You’re not eating anything?”
Anne: “I can’t. I’m in the depths of despair. Can you eat when you are in the depths of despair?”
-Anne of Green Gables

she runs to me
places her hands upon my sunken waist
“You’re soo skinny”
she tells me,
and shakes her head
Disapprovingly .
“Eat something”
she pushes a salad towards me.
the lettuce looks polluted and
finite.

its Crevices deep,
hiding reasons
I long to seek.
I’m always left out
I am a failure,

just like the soggy Croutons
just like you said I was
I can feel my bones

protruding out from the sheath of skin
I can feel the lethargy
seeping deep into
these Crevices.

“Are you okay?”
she asks
I smile politely
stomach a mouthful
of that green, green lettuce
it tastes of
Callous
ness

she smiles back
and begins talking
of her weekend plans.
